How to volunteer

Wildlife ACT is looking for people who want their contribution (in terms of their time and funds) to be effectively utilised in genuine conservation efforts. If you wish to be a part of a professional conservation team, make a real difference and experience important conservation work in Africa, then you are the kind of volunteer we are looking for! Anyone from the ages of 18 can join our team. All you need is the passion to make a difference, have a fair grasp of the English language, be in a reasonably good physical condition and most importantly, have a good attitude. And remember: This is Zululand, not Disneyland!
We have teamed up with AVIVA, South Africa's leading volunteer organisation, to help coordinate all our volunteer applications. This helps us to focus on what we're good at (being in the bush tracking and monitoring endangered African wildlife!), whilst ensuring that you receive the best possible support while preparing for your trip.
You can make a no obligation application at any time, it's as easy as 1, 2, 3!
Step One - Reserve your place
Fill in our simple online application form or student application form
Step Two - Logon to MyTrip - Your personalised Online Trip Planner
AVIVA will provisionally reserve your placement and email a unique username & password to you by the very next day. This will allow you to logon to MyTrip where you can view your full itinerary, approve your quote, and contact other volunteers.
Step Three - Pay Your Deposit
When you are happy with everything, you can secure your place by paying your deposit.. 50% of your remaining balance will be due 12 weeks before you arrive in South Africa, with the remainder due 4 weeks before you arrive.
Contact us at any time for help and advice
We guarantee you a prompt response to your enquiries. AVIVA's friendly team have a wealth of experience and are on hand to assist you with all aspects of your journey. You will be able to contact the Wildlife ACT team on the reserves so you you will have access to all the latest developments live from the field. The Wildlife ACT team can also help you with specific enquiries relating to latest animal sightings, and other interesting news as it happens.
Most volunteers join Wildlife ACT for four to twelve weeks, with a minimum stay being to weeks. We maintain a small volunteer group of no more than 4 people per reserve, and therefore reccomend that you apply as soon as possible in order to confirm the dates that suit you. Because Wildlife ACT runs a number of projects, we are in the unique position to offer you the opportunity to join us on more than one reserve, giving you the chance to experience diverse aspects of wildlife conservation. We try to rotate team members between reserves every 2 weeks, so the longer you stay the more chance you'll have of visiting other reserves.
You can start a placement every second Monday throughout the year as shown below.
