Coronavirus, Wet Markets & the Wildlife Trade

In April 2020, Blood Lions hosted a discussion on Twitter regarding coronavirus, wet markets and the wildlife trade and how these fit into the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr Simon Morgan of Wildlife ACT, provided scientific-based answers to the questions asked below.

Black Rhino Translocation to Malawi

Wildlife ACT has assisted with the monitoring of Black Rhino on all BRREP sites since the first population was established in 2004. In November 2019, we assisted with the BRREP’s 13th translocation. This operation saw 17 specially chosen, genetically diverse individuals, moved from KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to Malawi, marking the first cross-border translocation of its kind.

Tortoise DNA Project in KwaZulu-Natal

To minimise the threat of exposing existing wild populations to genetic out-crossing, the aim of the Tortoise DNA Project will be to ensure that the rescued and rehabilitated tortoises are genetically similar to the wild tortoise populations in the habitats where they may be released.

A Bush Walk Tracking Wildlife and Looking for Animal Signs

Towards the end of our first-ever Conservation Training Course, our students delved into the “Track & Sign” and “Camera Trapping” sections of their modules. This included a bush walk which incorporated the checking and downloading of our in-field camera traps, as well as an in-depth look at the abundant tracks and signs we experienced around us.
