Meet the Team: Mike Staegemann

Introducing Wildlife ACT’s Wild Dog Programme Manager and Southern Human Wildlife Coexistence Manager, Mike Staegemann. Mike has been with Wildlife ACT since 2017 and has always had a passion for Wildlife Conservation.

Mike Staegemann - Wildlife ACT Team

Where to find me:

I am based in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, but co-ordinate all the Wild Dog projects across Zululand, as well as being on standby for any Emergencies in the Southern Zululand region.

Why I do this:

I have always been passionate about Wildlife and Conservation since I was young, so since starting at Wildlife ACT in 2017 as a Priority Species Monitor, I have been in my element.

“Having the opportunity to be part of and helping to implement new adaptive management tools and research for the conservation of South Africa’s most endangered carnivore, keeps me driven and striving to do my best” – Mike Staegemann

Why conserving our endangered wildlife species is important:

All species play an integral role in our ecosystems. So, conserving species which have endangered status, is extremely important for ensuring the services the species perform are not lost, as it can have catastrophic impacts on the entire ecosystem.

Additionally, we as humans have drastically altered natural corridors through the formation of small, isolated reserves which have little to no connectivity. As our population continues to rise and further fragment the landscape and safe spaces available, we have a duty to help conserve the little we have left.

My favourite thing about the place where I work/live:

Every day is completely different, and the work/daily duties are dynamic and constantly changing.

My favourite animal:

Leopard and Spotted Hyaena.

My favourite bush memory:

Taking part in a flight over Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and seeing the landscape from a different perspective and in so doing understanding why the animals we have been tracking move into certain areas for resources.

Number one bush living survival hack:

Always have coffee before you leave in the morning… and water in the car in case you need to walk.

A message from Mike Staegemann to our supporters and followers:

It’s not too late to make a tangible difference and help conserve Africa’s iconic and endangered species from extinction by coming to join us on our projects. If we can continue the work we as Wildlife ACT do, as well as through the collaborations with our key partners, we will win this battle and secure wild populations of these animals for future generations to come.
